How to Make Easy Peanut Butter Treats for Dogs!
November 11, 2020. Rainy and warm. Easy Peanut Butter Treats.
Jump to RecipeI have 2 adorable rescue pugs that are my faithful companions. They love to stay in the kitchen whenever I am baking. Sometimes, they are actively being underfoot (waiting for me to spill or drop something?) and other times they just loll around snoozing peacefully in their doggie bed, contented to be nearby.
One of the things I realized soon after adopting them 4 years ago is that it is hard to find delicious, small and healthy-ish doggy treats for them. One, because pugs respond well to treats, and two, pugs tend to be on the chunky side, thus their treats need to be small for the frequency in which they are expected to be dispensed. Lol!
Anyway, I was tinkering around with a cookie recipe over the summer and thought, now if I just make this smaller and take out anything that is superfluous (to canines) I might just create a yummy treat for my little four legged friends. This is the outcome – I’ve made tweaks to it and this is version #5.
These treats are super easy to make, uses only 5 pantry ingredients and bakes up in under an hour!
Ingredients
2 cups (240g) All Purpose flour
1 cup (115g) Whole wheat flour
2 large eggs
¼ cup (60g) Regular peanut butter only! Please do NOT use peanut butter that uses sugar substitutes- they are harmful to canines!
½ cup (125g) Unsweetened applesauce
You will also need a rolling pin and parchment lined baking sheet to make this recipe.
Making Easy Peanut Butter Treats
Preheat oven 350°F (175°C). Gather all ingredients.
Sift the flour together. Mix in eggs, peanut butter and applesauce until fully combined to form a dough.
Roll out dough using a rolling pin on lightly floured surface till approx. ¼ inch (½ cm) thick. Use cookie cutter to press out shapes.
Put on parchment lined cookie sheet and bake for 18-20 minutes till treats are dry and golden. Transfer to cooling rack.
Once cooled, give Fido a treat! Store the rest in an air tight container.
Note: Number of treats depends on the size of your cookie cutter. For the ones I used, the recipe yielded approximately 8 dozen. I wanted to make small treats for my small dogs. If you want to make larger treats, simply use larger cookie cutters.
