Jump to Recipe

I was in the mood for a slice of apple tart today. The unceasing election news for the past few days has thrown me off my usual routine. I have been too distracted to focus my attention on an all- involved bake. Thus, I decided to revisit a favorite recipe, with a few helpful shortcuts.

Semi-Homemade Apple Tart

This recipe is similar to the one I shared here. However, I wanted to make this fast and a tad smaller, so we could consume it all in a day. This easy and gorgeous apple tart uses pre-made frozen pie crust, 3 large apples and whips up in under an hour. The tart looks amazing and tastes delicious! Without further ado, let’s get baking!

Ingredients for Semi-Homemade Apple Tart

1 9 inch (22-23cm) Pie crust/tart shell, store bought
3 large apples, Granny Smith or your choice
3 Tbsp. sugar
4 Tbsp. unsalted butter, sliced thin
3 Tbsp. apricot jam combined with 2 tablespoons water, heated, and strained

No special tools or equipment needed for this recipe. However, a very sharp kitchen knife and a melon baller would be very helpful to prepare the apples.

Preparing the Apples

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Take out store bought tart shell/pie crust from freezer.

Start by cleaning, peeling and cut all the apples in half. Next, core the apple halves with melon baller. With a very sharp knife, slice the apples crosswise, but don’t cut all the way down; stop just before it reaches the cutting board so that the apples stay attached at the bottom. When you have sliced all the apples, turn each on its side to expose the bottom. Then, cut off about 1/4 inch of the bottom to remove the part of the apple that has not been sliced through. This method will ensure all the apple slices will stay together and easier to handle. (See more pictures and explanation here.)

Assembling the Components

When ready, arrange the apple halves like the spokes of a wheel on the pastry leaving a gap in the center. Then, gently press down on the apple halves to spread the slices slightly. Next, arrange the remaining apple slices in concentric circles in the center of the tart starting from the outside and working your way in until there is a small space in the center. Fill in the additional spaces with small pieces to decorate, if you wish.

Then, carefully sprinkle the sugar evenly on top of the apples slices. Finally top the entire tart with thinly sliced butter.

Baking and Glazing

Pop the entire pan into the preheated oven. Bake in the middle of the oven for 40 to 45 minutes or until the crust is cooked through and the apples are golden brown.

Baking the Apple Tart

When the tart is baking, place apricot jam into a microwave safe bowl and mix with water. Stir well to combine. Zap in microwave until warm, about 1-2 minutes. Strain and set aside.

When the tart is ready, remove from oven. Brush with the heated apricot jam while the tart is still hot.

Your delicious apple tart is ready. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream, or with whipped cream! Bon Appetit!
