The Best Grape Clafoutis

Backstory

About 8 years ago, I was browsing at my favorite home store and stumbled upon this gorgeous ruffled pie dish. It was deep purple (or aubergine) and the beautiful glaze was simply asking to be taken home. So, I did. Upon closer inspection, I found out it was a clafoutis dish.

Of course, I had to google and find out more about this clafoutis thing. And it turns out the pretty ruffled dish is actually used to bake fruits, traditionally black cherries, covered in thick custard batter. Naturally, the grande dame of French cooking, Julia Child, had the perfect Clafoutis recipe* to test drive. So this is the case of the dish finding the recipe and not the other way round.

Fast forward to this summer, and I was staring at this huge 5 pound container of green seedless grapes from Costco. Funny thing is that my kids have a way of loving a food and eating it like ravenous beasts. And amazingly the next week, they would not touch the same food with a 6 foot pole. Go figure. Therefore, in order to use up the grapes, I decided to bake and make this Grape Clafoutis recipe.

After that. gently tap the dish to settle the grapes and mixture. Place the filled dish onto a cookie sheet (to catch any spillage), and put the whole thing into the oven.

Next, bake in oven for 50 minutes. When the top is golden brown, check to make sure the center is set. Insert a knife or a bamboo skewer in the center – if it comes out clean it is done. If not, bake for another 10-15 minutes. Finally, remove pan from oven. Let the clafoutis cool for 10 minutes, and then dust with icing sugar, if desired. Slice and enjoy!
